Because if it weren’t squared it’d be velocity instead of acceleration. Meters per second is velocity, which is distance over time traveled. Acceleration is an increase of velocity (meters per second) over a period of time (second). Hence why it’s seconds squared. If that doesn’t explain it very well, let me know and I’ll see if I can dig up a better example than me rambling.
