Kids Reading Websites – I need Innovative Online Courses that help in Teaching my Child to Read?

I’ve looked into a couple courses & books on Amazon, Starfall and PBS Kids including a number of reading clubs for kids. What I need specifically is something easy, innovative yet effective to teach your child to read. Can you please recommend a time-saving guide or comprehensive training resource that’s related to kids reading online? It would be very useful to me.

For a reading course to work, you have to be able to relate to the methods being taught there. When I started teaching my kid to read, I used phonics. It’s the same method that’s been around for over 100 years, and something that’s been passed down for generations.

In this regard, I can recommend the Children Learning Reading guide:

It is one of my favorite kids’ reading websites that has been instrumental in teaching phonics in a unique way.

See, my boy is 3 years old and I’ve been reading books for kids at my local library to find the best way to approach the written word. That’s when I came across the technique of Phonemic Awareness that connects how words sound with the way babies and young ones learn to read.

This course goes in-depth into this reading technique and expands from there. It is suitable for kids as young as 2 or 3 and helps you prepare them for kindergarten and elementary school level reading.

  1. No, you really don’t.

Start going to your local library. Encourage your child to choose some picture books which appeal to him. Spend time every day sitting with him and sharing the books. As and when he starts showing interest in what the black squiggles are, discuss with him that these are the words you are reading.

Throwing money at it doesn’t work. Being innovative doesn’t work. What works is showing your child that books and reading are fun, so that they actively want to be able to do it for themselves. Book clubs and gimmicks just teach your child that book clubs and gimmicks are fun.

Both my children could read – and were doing so for fun – long before they went to school.

  2. The best way to teach your kid to read is to read to them – a lot.

In addition to Starfall (which appeals to some kids, but not all), one other place that is fantastic for kids learning to read is Tumblebooks. They have lots and lots of books on-line that can be read out loud to your kid, and follow along the words on the page.

The reading levels are primarly for the K-3rd grade. Access is usually through your local library.
