No problem. …
No problem. Languages fascinate me and since I’m learning so many languages I try to find similarities between words and possible influences, original meaning and so I had already checked on obrigado and arigatou. If you’re interested you can go to japanesepod101 and find “Learn Japanese Word Orgins 8″ with the word arigatou. It has an interesting story behind it. I was going to explain it but Hiroko’s video is better.
Thanks for the …
Thanks for the clear up. I pay attention to similarities and connections to words so I know what I’m really saying.
Nevertheless, I …
Nevertheless, I gotta hand it to ya. There are probably not to many people that would notice a similarity or even wonder about the origin and connections.
It’s not origato in …
It’s not origato in portuguese. It’s obrigado. The formal way of saying thank you is agradecido. In brazil they use obrigado as well.
Of course, when contries have close relations with one another they influence each other. The japanese got the word igirisu (english-ingles), tabako (tabaco) manto (cloak – manto), kappa (raincoat-capa), kandeya (oil lamp-candeia), furasuko (flask-frasco) and so on. But arigatou has been used well before Japanese had any contact with Portugal.

Post more of these! They’re really interesting
I could be mistaken …
I could be mistaken, but I do remember once getting a crash course on Portuguese culture when I read that their word of thanks is “Origato.” Knowing that the Japanese language did get a lot of influence from the Portuguese missionaries and explorers, I thought, “Could this be the origin?

I am a little new …
I am a little new to learning Japanese. But I have noticed some small things that I want to ask about.
I have noticed that many characters in Katakana are based on Kanji or Hiragana. like 八 (8 in Kanji) and ハ (ha in Katakana).
So I am not wrong in thinking that a lot of Katakana’s etymology is from Kanji, right?
